In 2008, the Cuyahoga County Coroner’s Office expanded its Community Outreach Program with the addition of a Police Liaison Department. By doing so, the Coroner’s Office raised its level of excellence and enhanced the lines of communication with local law enforcement agencies.
One-day training programs are offered to law enforcement officers at no charge to their respective departments. Training modules are held monthly and include class room experience as well as hands-on training that cover such topics as:
- Evidence collection and scene investigation
- Trace Evidence (microscopic analysis of materials and interpretation of results)
- Forensic Audio/Video Analysis (scientific examination and/or evaluation of video and audio evidence)
- Controlled Substance and Other Toxicant Screens
- DNA
Attendees also have the opportunity to view an autopsy during which they learn about the relevance of drawing postmortem specimens for analysis.
The Coroner’s Police Liaison visits and interacts daily with law enforcement personnel.
In addition to its active training sessions, the Police Liaison also maintains a list of analytical tests that can be performed through the expertise of the Cuyahoga County Coroner’s laboratories at competitive costs. These services are available to police departments and businesses throughout the State of Ohio.
